Recipe to Keep Your Heart in Check

Oh, the desires of one’s heart. We all have them. But when our desires become our main focus, and we live our lives solely based on them, it can be dangerous, especially when they are of this world.

In the past I’ve made decisions based on MY desires – my wants, my needs.

A good friend once told me a couple of years ago, “All I hear you say is…me, me, ME!!”

I’ve been known to be quite selfish and a little obsessive.  My marriage was in jeopardy and with two small children, I became focused on getting out and showing the world how independent I could be.

Thankfully, God had a different plan for my family.  He fired up the Holy Spirit in my heart, and now I have a really hard time living this life for myself.  Truth is, it isn’t all about me anymore and I am so thankful for that.  Life is so much simpler letting God take care of it all.  When I do revert back and lose my focus, God’s got that covered too!  God is at the center of my family’s lives and we are constantly seeking out His guidance and way for us.

Now, instead of obsessing over house work and other little stuff, I’m learning to let go.  Spending quality time with my family is far more important to me than folding laundry.

The recipe in keeping your heart in check is simple with only a few main ingredients:

1. A Bible.  It is truly our very own instruction book for life.  Here you will find direction from the One and Only.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

2. Prayer and Meditation.  Pray about your desires.  Ask God to show you if they are eternal or worldly.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).

3. Girl Friends.  Seek to find and connect with a few Christian girl friends to love, support and encourage.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.  For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.  Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone?  Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.  And a threefold cord is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).

Special Instructions: Each day take time to search out Truth.  Read your Bible.  Take time to reflect and meditate on what God is trying to tell or show you.  Keep in constant communication with your God – He loves you and wants to hear from you often.  Lastly, laugh.  Have fun.  Enjoy your family and friends.
